    External window silicone gaps

I've noticed some fairly big gaps in the silicone above a couple of our external windows. I was just wondering if we might be better trying to use something other than silicone to cover this? I'm thinking if we re-silicone, due to the size of gaps if might just break away again. See attached...

Rebuilding Bay Window... with minor alterations

Hi All, Looking for some advice on how to proceed. I have a 1930s semi with a three section bay window. This was originally supported by the structural wooden frames, and unfortunately was at one point bodged (arent they all) for unsupportive UPVC frames, causing a slight drop above and...

Cost to replace 1970s bungalow steel window lintels

Hi, We have a 1970s bungalow, the gable end seems to have an issue with the original steel window lintels having rusted. One window has a gap in the pointing of about 12mm where the bricks have raised all the way along. The other window has a door as well so a bigger span, gap in pointing at...

Stuck saracen lock on uPVC window

We have a window that is stuck closed. It appears (based on the window next to it) to have a Saracen deadlock gearbox with rods that extend directly into the frame (when closed) as opposed to having a roller. The handle will turn and one side of the window will slightly move (1-2mm) when trying...

Hi Everyone, hope you are all keeping warm and well. I'm hoping some damp experts out there can help me out with this one. My living room window has damp on the inner top window sill. My first thought was condensation but its discoloured and feels wet to the touch (which I only spotted from...

Damp patches at corner of Upvc windows

Hi all, Both windows in our bedroom have recently developed damp patches around the bottom corners of the plaster board of both windows. The house is about 10 years old so I suspect a seal somewhere may have perished. I have checked outside and the frame and there doesn't appear to be any...

Adding an additional pane of glass to a wooden frame door

Hi everyone, Would like some advice on insulation of the front door. The front door is made out a really nice wooden frame (looks better on the outside): And I really like the look of it, however it's not the warmest. The bottom panels were just basic thin wood ones so I was able to cover them...

    Sash Window Draught Excluder Strips

I'm overhauling my windows - filling, sanding, painting, etc. They're single glazed wooden sash units. Where the two sashes meet there are what look like draught excluder strips - lengths of plastic about 7mm wide with brushing attached (see photos). They fit into horizontal grooves in the...

Why is the inner seal of my window like this?

The inner seal/aluminium spacer in our window seems to have drooped. I don’t know how good the image is to see, but you can see it bends and then there’s a small gap in the middle that you can see between.

Removing old plaster and window has come loose!

Hi, Really hope someone can help. I was asked to remove the plaster from a second floor wall that had some damp stains so the plasterer could board and replaster (we thought we had fixed the cause of the damp). As i was doing so, some bricks started coming loose beneath the window where the damp...

    Wheat materials do I use?

I need to repair some chapel windows around a property I purchased earlier this year. I could do with some advice on 1) what wood should I use to repair any rotten window sections? Would standard B&Q softwood be ok here? 2) What should I use to replace the gap between the window and the wall...

    Eurocell or Swish Upvc Windows?

Hi I have the option of Swish or Eurocell double glazed upvc Windows installed in my cottage. I don't want tilt and turn other than where I absolutely have to. Swish can't apparently do side opening windows because the windows are too tall so they have to be bottom opening, not sure I fancy...

Hi all, I'm new here and would appreciate any advice.. I have a bay window (this style might be termed bow window). Door Question

I am building a sound studio on the top floor of an office building and because it will be a "room within a room" design (for soundproofing), the inner dimensions will shrink a fair bit. So, Is there a minimum height regulation for the doors? I have space for a 1940mm high door. Is that OK?

Are these windows fitted ok? Pics included.

We live on a fairly busy road, technically 20mph but everyone does at least 30mph. There is a constant stream of traffic until fairly late in the evening and queues during morning and evening rush hours. Motorbikes go up and down late at night. No lorries or buses normally though due to narrow...

Wood rot on outdoor window frame advice please!

We recently found a large patch of wet rot on one of our outdoor frames, which has been looked at and we've been told the whole frame probably needs replacing because of where it is... so that's fine. We also found some smaller patches on our other window frames, of soft, flaky wood. These...
