£350 pm to put up a Ukrainian refugee

Some one has mentioned ?? Else where

if you take in a refugee would they be classified as lodgers

you are being paid ?

Would you require a gas safety certificate for your prop ????

could well be other potential legal issues ???????

what liability would one have if some one got injured in your prop ? Via some accident ???

I think @ellal has all the answers to this and many questions like this. They had already virtue signalled and made up their mind that they are getting a Ukrainian family come what may and poo poo'd any similar concerns I had on such 'trivial' matters.

I just expected them to be much more third world, much more rural, much more Slavick, instead they are very European.

"Much more Slavick [sic]..." doesn't make it sound any better, Harry, and nobody says 'Third World' anymore; it's 'developing world'.
Do you think Slavs aren't European? Western Ukraine is closer to Europe than the East and the citizens of Lviv and Kyiv are culturally sophisticated people.
I've always taken the Eastern Edge of Europe to run along the line of the Urals, but who knows where the EU thinks it is.

It's OK for you if you can afford to pay higher taxes for the refugees on top of the current tax and price increases; you must be well off. But, what about those who cannot afford it? Many in our country are struggling already and wouldn't, given the choice, pay any more tax or any more for their petrol. Charlie would you be prepared to pay the £350 a week, for 2 years (or whatever the specified period is) from your own money?

Good point Transam, and in that good point you have shown why the west is weak and has no money, i.e. we make silly rules to prevent us from doing things. Expect a multitude of scams and shyster lawyers offering their services, all sucking at the public teat.

As shown by the covid scamdemic, you shouldn't believe all that comes out of your television Harry.

Well you wouldnt be struggling so much if this country had a more left wing government in power that reduced inequality

but you want right wing governments that give the power to big business -who reduce your rights and pay whilst they get richer and richer

are you happy that billinaires pay no tax and are effectively benefit scroungers?

you are an odd person really -you scream about how much you hate the left, despite the fact they would make your life better

You cannot get much further left than modern British governments Notch, they have given everything away. As I keep telling you, they are conservative in name only.

In Europe, Ukrainian refugees are permitted to work. Which helps their host country and enables them to support themselves and their families.

What could be better?

In other news,

"Pressure on the UK’s labour market increased over the winter, with official data showing the number of unfilled jobs rose to a record of more than 1.3mn as people continued to leave the workforce.

Businesses remained keen to hire."

FT.com

"Employment was a full percentage point below its pre-pandemic level, because of an increase in the number of people who were economically inactive — neither in work nor looking for a job.

The ONS said the inactivity rate stood at 21.3 per cent, 1.1 percentage points higher than its pre-pandemic level, with the latest increase driven by older workers opting out."

Round about 3 million refugees have fled Ukraine.

UK has too many anti-foreigners, like andy and Prity. This is nothing new. The same reaction was found when Jews tried to flee Nazism.

UK goverment effort is small and grudging. As usual.

"Which countries are Ukraine's refugees fleeing to?
Refugees are crossing to neighbouring countries to the west, such as Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary and Moldova.

The UN says that as of 13 March:

  • Poland had taken in 1,720,227 refugees
  • Hungary 255,291
  • Slovakia 204,862
  • Moldova 106,994
  • Romania 84,671 (as at 8 March)
  • Russia 131,365
  • Belarus 1,226
More than 304,000 people have gone to other European countries, the UN says."

At European railway stations, arriving refugees find rows of prams, strollers and baby blankets donated by local mothers for the benefit of those who may have fled with nothing.

Yes. We had already decided to help before the £350 a month was announced. We are just us two, we have a modest house with 3 bathrooms and 4 bedrooms. We can afford this by self-building 26 years ago, in a cheaper area of UK; and with me doing everything to keep it going since. We do ok, far from loaded. We live in a great country, where you can call the PM a **** to his face on national tv and no-one 'comes around' in a black suv for a chat. We have been hard working since our 20s and have a modest pension each.

I don't believe in luck per se, but our accident of birth in Wales means we can help. Our upbringing means we know we should help.

You don't have to. Neither do you have to be a naysayer: try this, "It's not for me, but good luck if you want to". With the covid and Brexit costs we are about to bear, you personally, won't even see the extra 'massive tax hike' you are touting.
