Not me though mate, self employed since the late 70's. No sick pay, no subsidised benefits or pensions, no lengthy holiday periods with pay, weekend working and late nights home being the norm.

Did you live in a paper bag? Did you have to lick the road clean with your tongue?
Classic!

Luxury, when I was a lad, had tongue removed t' feed family. Paper bag was repossessed and we all had t'o huddle together under t' semi-detached lolly stick.

You are admirably concise and I understand all of it. Actually,as I have been self-employed and am now a company director I knew all of it already but I try not to let myself get bitter about it. Thank-you for letting me know I am out of touch with reality, it must be the tablets.

I am sorry to hear you had to go limited was that because of debt?

I didn't understand your remark about licking roads so can you explain please.

funny about the self employed bit as we had a group of self employed sparks working in an area at work for the last few months and the other day i along with a manager found 3 of them asleep on the floor and one reading a paper when they should have been working! and no it wasn't a break. so much for your theory MATE.

Whats your point kendor? surely if these people were self employed they are on a price, so can have as many breaks as they like. They are only costing themselves money not the public purse.

I should imagine there was a genuine reason for this though, they may of been waiting for materials, work permits or for the power to be turned off etc. Perhaps they had been watching the slowness of public workers there and it had made them fall asleep? Did you ask them?

On the other hand perhaps they have put some noughts on the bill so the job can stand it.

Ian, I never watched Monty Python, I thought it rubbish. But how does a comedy sketch fit in with a discussion about the about illegal people in the country?

you do have double standards.
it's ok if workmen take the p*ss, but you don't tolerate others going by your posts!

Tell the youth of today and they think you've made it up ;)

Possibly trying to induce some light heartedness into the thread? It did fit in with your comment, but you had to be there I suppose.

Sounds like D&J aren't in a jovial sort of mood so making light of it seems to have gone over their head a bit, but i laughed with you anyway :)

Don't follow you kendor, both you and the director have mentioned the youth of today, what have they got to do with it?

But there may of been a genuine reason for it, according to you 3 people asleep means the whole British workforce are workshy. Furthermore I also never said all foreigners were lazy, this is whay I said.
Bit of a sweeping statement this, there are good and bad as well as lazy and productive in every race. Incidently where did jasy mention Eastern bloc countries?
Why do you keep suggesting I am racist and against all immigrants? I am only against further immigration like most people in this country are. I have said on countless occasions that I would let the ones here stay.

Please don't think i'm calling you racist i'm not but you tend to sway against the ethnic population.

the joke is a classic monty python sketch a brilliant parody of the older generation telling the youth of today how hard a time they had when they were young.
It's not in any way pointed towards yourself or your viewpoint which you are entitled to, merely making light fun of the sentence you said, it's the way it came over or the way you tell em ;)

There will be plenty of self employed people reading this who can relate to what I'm saying. If we want holidays we save because we don't get them paid by the boss.
Don't know if any of you self-employed and small business knows this, they are obliged by EU law to take 4 weeks paid leave every year and there are no exemption as they are legally bound by EU legislation to give them 4 weeks paid leave whether they like it or not.
