Life is going to change again, clever japan, went that way, and it costs the safety of lots. Let's build lot's of cars, hmm' bet they think again.

Hmmm Let's look at the future of electricity generation then Libby.
Do we go with wind farm technology? Produces electricity only whilst the wind is blowing at a certain speed? No.
Do we go with fossil fuels? Their going to run out eventually, so No.
Solar technology? If only we could overcome the problems of power distribution, it might have a chance. But only if we can build these plants in equatorial countries. so at the moment, that's a No.
Nuclear generation,,,, We know that this works, however, the circumstances in Japan have shown the limitations of building these in countries that are prone to large earthquakes. But that's the thing Libby. There are large areas of this world that are not (or hardly ) affected by 9.0 magnitude earthquakes. So at the moment, this seems to be the way to go.
How many major accidents have there been with nuclear power plants in the last 50 yrs ? I can only think of 3 major ones. 3 mile island (fairly minor ) Chernobyl and now Japan (although in Japan's case there are extenuating circumstances) ;) ;)

Lessons will be learnt, I just hope they can contain the pollution to a reasonable level, they as a nation are going through hell, and my heart goes out to them.
Had they, have had better back up electricity generation, to saftely cool the reactors, then things could have been so much different, hind sight is a wonderful thing, and the power of nature awesome.
Nuclear power is here to stay, there really is no long term option, other than nuclear power.

Yes, I can't understand why they didn't build their backup generators at a high level. Like you say hindsight is easy, but in a country where tsunami's do happen, it wouldn't take much foresight to think of that.

Or have a big lake/tank at the top of a hill or water tower and gravity feed the water. Then they just have to keep that topped up which would have a buffering effect if the pumps stopped for whatever reason. Maybe its too obvious?

I think the Japs are going to get absolutely slaughtered by the Nuclear Power Nations, and others, for there stupid and cavalier way of building power stations without a thought of safety.

It doesn't take much thought to implement measures to take care of these problems and it appears they gave very little.

They as a nation of have brought shame on themselves for their stupidity.

They can be arrogant pigheaded plonkers at times and only get what they asked for.

Ah! Sellafield....The British never did trust that place...nice quiet local beaches in the eighties... :D

Has Japan suffered tsunamis in the past? Before the one in Indonesia, I'd never even heard of a tsunami.

Looking on the bright side, no other country in the world has more experience of clearing up after nuclear disasters.

Has Japan suffered tsunamis in the past?

Tsunami is a japanese word.

With no equivalent word in English.I first read about them 50 years ago and learned that the sea receded before coming back with a vengeance.

It amazed me in Indonesia to see the locals running out when the sea went out, to collect fish caught up in pools...
Surely their forefathers must have talked about previous events and warned them that a receding sea was a warning sign...but obviously not.

They obviously weren't educated about this happening in the past, the most famous event being when Krakatoa blew in the nineteenth century.Followed by a huge Tsunami that killed 36,000.

Natives living a stone age existence on Indonesian islands had these stories in their folk law.During the Indonesian event they didn't lose a single tribe member...they had headed for the hills at the first signs. So much for modern education.

Japan has been building massive anti Tsunami sea defences since the 60s
but this one was bigger than they ever imagined.

I think most of the technology they used was from the Brits, which the Americans stole, after ww2..There are immesearable safety controls in there. But if you have an Earthquake, and then a flood, you are being challenged. Not stupid.

htgeng - They have a big tank of water on gravity feed, presumably, but a massive earthquake, and a huge wave of water has wiped it out, what is your next suggestion? Huge Dams hve been destroyed, so a pump feeding a cooler is small fry.
