4mm ring

It is not correct to suggest that the armour need not be Earthed. Earthing of the armour is compulsory, mandatory and must be done in all circumstances. Gland it into the backboxes properly. It is not optional.
Couldn't agree more.

What about when a length of SWA is being used as a washing line?

Seriously though, this is silly.

If you are correct, then why does not ALL electric cable have to have an earthed metal covering?

What regulation number(s) does this contravene then?
There isnt one but the regs are a minimum requirement, on this I go above and beyond, hope that doesnt offend anyone.

In which case you are mistaken. You are agreing with:
Earthing of the armour is compulsory, mandatory and must be done in all circumstances
... which is a very strong assertion. "Compulsory", "mandatory" and "must be done in all circumstances" cannot be true unless there are laws or regulations which say that - and, as you have subsequently agreed, there are no such laws/regulations.

Kind Regards, John

I agreed it should be done, dont care about the law it's the right way to do the job.

As I understand it, the sections where the armour has been cut back is NOT under the concrete, but up the wall - sockets mounted 450mm from floor, armour cut back 50mm from socket back box.
Fair enough - I clearly did misunderstand.. However, as below, I don't think that materially alters my view.
So he could lower the sockets and fit glands, or fit a short lengths of galv conduit between gland and box, or just leave it and forget it.
Yes, it seems that he could do any of those things, and (as will presumably not surprise you) my personal inclination would be to suggest the last one.

It continues to rather amaze me that there have been 6-7 pages of discussion about the need (or otherwise) to earth something which, as things are, is (and always will be) totally untouchable. Even the bit of cable in the wall does not need earthed armour so long as (as is required) it is RCD-protected. Ironically, any approach which involved 'properly glanding' the SWA with a metal gland would (without a lot of additional hassle/work) actually make it effectively 'touchable'!

That's fair enough - but I would hope that you will agree that if (as is the case) there is no law/regulation creating such an obligation, it is very misleading ('wrong'!) to say that something is "mandatory", "compulsory" and "must be done in all circumstances" - don't you agree ?

I do agree we have been through this, in the OP's case it's not to late to do a proper job

I don't necessarily disagree with that (although I remain far from convinced that it's necessary to earth something that could never be touched in order to make it 'a proper job') but, as before, and for the reason I mentioned before (potentially misleading subsequent readers of the thread), I am not happy to leave incorrect assertions about what is "compulsory" or "mandatory" unchallenged ('not corrected').

In England, nothing is "compulsory" or "mandatory" except you must "ensure safety" and if it is a "new circuit" inform the Local Authority that it is being done.

can you elaborate on the need to inform the local authority that I am putting in a new cuircuit, are we saying building control??

We agree its unnecessary cable to use.

We disagree that glands need to be fitted to swa in every case, I think its misleading for future readers to think that thay can use swa without glands, we will have to agree to disagree on that.
