Had a job today to remove two tongue and groove ceilings fit new light and fit replacement shower.

Home owner claims this light fitting and shower were installed by a qualified electrician. I don't believe him.

The metal connectors were pushed up into the ceiling void

Maybe it was a Part P registered firm that billed for the work, and the actual installation was done by an untrained, unqualified, unsupervised, and very hard of thinking person.

I hope you ran a mile when you saw the state of the electrics, the consumer unit isn't rated to have two 40A breakers in it, I doubt it is actually rated to have one! (which is why the bases have an extra tab on them and cock over if you try to fit one which is too big.)

I will be fitting the new shower and plumbing it in but will not connect the tricity. Have told him to get an electrician in to test and fit new consumer unit.

Will also point out the 40amp breakers to him.

I'd advise to get the CU sorted before the replacement shower goes in.

Why, as I said I will do the plumbing but not connect the tricity. The shower unit is on the airing cupboard wall, I have pulled the cable through and disconnected the load cable from the isolation switch. The supply has the fuse withdrawn and is languishing in my toolbag.

Wouldn't like to imagine what might happen should someone use the shower and whatever else (no doubt a cooker) is connected to the other 40amp. Especially if the same level of "workmanship" has been used on that too!

That fusebox is a real worry. Is it the only one in the house?

If so, is there really only one light circuit and one radial (served by the 16A cb) doing all the sockets, in the property?

That's assuming the two 40amp ones are radial serving cooker and shower perhaps?

Or is one 40A on a ring final :?:
