The metal connectors were pushed up into the ceiling void
Those metal connectors are the remains of a ceiling rose, and to get the metal parts out, someone has deliberately smashed and broken it.

If that fusebox has been used with anything near 40A on either of those circuits, it will be totally ruined.
You may find that the 40A breakers are welded to the contacts and can't be removed without breaking something. The main switch may also be welded closed.
It has a wooden frame, so when it overheats there is a nice lot of dry kindling right next to the hot parts to ensure maximum flames.
There is probably no back on it either.

The property is a one level maisonette. The shower coming out and the one going in is 7.5 kw. Don't know what the oven is but that probably does not need a 40 w fuse.

I'm not convinced modern plastic boards do any better than the old hardwood frames tbh. Certainly the report I read on flamibility of plastic switchgear made slightly worrying reading!

Not only is the shower plate wired reverse polarity, but its actually crossed over, one sides wired properly!

7.5kw shower shouldnt be on a 40A anyway should it?

Surely if you believe he bodged it himself, then as soon as you walk out the door hes going to **** the cables back into the undersized fusebox and continue with the unsafe installation?

The fuse protects the cable not the device.

So as long as 6mm cable, should be fine, trouble is 32 amp is borderline.
