Anything that anyone buys on this planet has a mark up and the mark up depends on what the person/company buying the goods is prepared to accept

 Theres me thinking that I was getting groceries from Tesco for cost price.

OK then fellas.

here is an idea that might actually please you. It certainly will not go against the grain and it did happen on the planet earth before...

Since there are so many people starving around the world why dont we bring back slavery?!

You can all be slave masters for it makes excellent fiscal sense and if the poor dont die in the process everyone is a winner baby! Show me the money I hear you shout!!

Far from equating these concepts I am merely trying to illustrate that some things which went on and made perfect financial sense were actually wrong... Is it not possible that we are surrounded with things that are still wrong?? Just because it makes you the most amount of money it does not mean it is necessarily correct. If it was then why dont we legalise gambling prostitution and drugs?

If you want to trade and mark up goods for profit then by all means open a shop. I encourage you to do this and compete with other shops in the market place.

If you want to be a carpet fitter then fit carpets.

If you want to do both then open a shop and fit carpets.

It all makes perfect sense to decent people doesnt it?!

Mr Happy you do not have a clue about running a small business/being self employed.

Sorry that's not the way it works.
Just to give you one example a relative of mine in the construction trade supplies the concrete to his customers at a cheaper rate than they could purchase the stuff themselves.
Why ?.
Because he purchases thousands of tons of the stuff from one supplier and they give him a good discount.
He then has a mark up on the concrete and uses this extra cash to pay for costs his bank charges him.
Its all part of running a business. If you ever get off your backside and actually run a business then you might understand.

Have you got your boiler commissioned yet?

Mr Happyskyper.
around about 04.20hrs saturday morning, I was in my private hospital room lying in bed unable to to sleep, surfing through all the tv channels, when i just got fed up with sky film after none stop film and i clicked on to channel 4.

there was a documentary called dont blame the builder...

I lay there between trips to the loo, watching it, it sort of reminded me of your previous thread and the dilema's, you were facing.

strangely if feel, you could learn a lot from taking 40mins to watch it, and so could many others.

see it again here

it seemed to exemplify a commonly held miss conception about customers supplying materials.

Happy - how come I pay more interest on my Mortgage than the Bank of England base rate?

Who pays me for sitting in my office all Saturday doing the paper work?

Who pays me for going to look at a part that has failed in its warranty ?

Who pays me to research product after product so that I can give people options for their projects (which I might not necessarily end up working on)?

Who pays for the bank charges my company is charged?

Who pays for the public liability insurance, Diesel, Road Tax, Van Insurance, Mobile phones, Accountants?

Who pays my apprentice's wages?

Who pays for the relationship building that goes on in merchants - because there is trade and there is trade?

Instead of "who pays" think of it in terms of "where does the money come from to pay ".

I pay less than trade for some things... and I know I pay more than trade price for others.

Being able to put a mark up on materials purchased covers the costs of running a business that means that it more equitable for customers.

If you are being ripped of my your tradesmen it is probably because you are a prize pillock and they are making it worth their while.

aah here we go with the non descript descriptions that are not within the framework already described..

After so many posts and reads and reposts is not painfully obvious that I am after clarification and quantification of the factors...

Initially lets forget a relative running some business.. I suggest we quantify things and give them some value.

Perhaps you would be kind enough to supply the info with respect to exact amount, grade of concrete and price per M3 that is being charged and I guarantee you that I will find it on the open market cheaper!! Now thats what open transparent competition in the market place will offer me as an end consumer.

What you described is how this idea of charging mark up prices on top gets born and off the ground (everyone is a winner sort of thing) but soon the prices run wild because we forget to take into account something inherent within the human nature called corporate greed.

Perhaps the reason I will be able to match the price or get it cheaper elsewhere is another person's relative doing the same thing you just described? NO problem if buying concrete and selling it on at a good price is all your relative's business is about and its clearly communicated to his clients whereby they can check the price against the market and make an informed choice. I would say that your relative is a rather smart guy and good luck to him.. he has found his niche and if in doing so he also truly made everyone a winner then thats it!! Id like to buy him a drink and have a chat for that kind of person is worthy of my time.

I was referring to trade people who have unfair competitive advantage over customers that need a job doing and as a part of the same equation they shamelessly boost their profits by insisting or even worse tricking their way into supplying the materials at higher prices. Some go as far for example to pass onto the customer in excess of their actual cost if a person requires to rent a tool for the job .. Now do they have a licence to run a tool hire shop?

What do you think of the following practice? Getting their colleagues to work on a day rate and charging the client more for this.. Do they also run an employment agency? Come on...

These things make money but they are wrong no matter which end you look at it from!

it is a different story if they actually inform the client of each and every avenue they are using to make money and the client agrees.

Come on guys you are smart enough to get the gist as to what I am referring to. Just be a little straight forward and have a some courage to admit that this is not on in modern society, especially the one that is struggling to pay the bills.

Don't worry happy you will soon have enough money to have your system/boiler commissioned by a Rgi. ;)

Xmas is coming and time for another postal strike.
2-3 days no pay

Then lets cream the overtime, double shift, book extra time on delivery (which do not increase in number of calls) more overtime sorting backlogs all on top of xmas pressure which will be still there in January. £££££££££

Oh don't forget the tax free xmas tips. £££££££

Been there done that and burnt the uniform.

It amazes me that the intelligent people on this forum can't see that this idiot is on a wind up mission. He must be laughing his head off. He makes a facile comment/s and you all take the bait.

There are two very clear cut choices with this guy. He is either retarded or a wind up merchant. Make up your own mind.

YES I managed to find someone who will do the boiler.. Seems a nice chap.

225 quid which I think is very decent.. 175 quid saving on the previous lowest quote, 625 quid saving on the previous highest quote and 375 quid saving on the average of previous quotes.

If the job is spot on I will give the guy an extra 50 quid. That would be nice and also fair.

I will also let you know how long it takes him... I am taking bets and you will get really good odds on anything that says it will be more than 4 hours... Lets see who will put their money where their mouth was!?

It will be after xmas though as I will have to save for it!
