Alpha CB50 Boiler exploded today

This boiler should only be worked on by an unvented G3 ticket holder, due to the unvented cylinder part.

Make sure whoever you get to do the alterations is G3 registered.

Discharge of the unvented cylinder should be max 4" off the floor according to regs.

If the boiler was seriously dangerous then it would have been classed as ID.

I am goint to go and take an angle grinder to the pipe now to get it 4" from the floor to stop it happening again - especially with more cold weather on the way.

How do I find a G3 registered Corgi guy??

funnily enough not many of the bg guys have g3. Anyway bg would charge quite a lot to put that right.

But even if the installer had followed page 9 of the manufacturers installation instructions he would have got it right.

As I said it is not unusual to find this element of installation neglected. Sadly it seams there are installers without the ticket who consequently are unaware of the reason for everything, so they miss it through ignorance or neglect it through ignorance. the greatest part of training is to put the trainee into the mind set which understands the importance of the method.

Just phone around asking do you have your unvented certificate? Can you check and put right the discharge pipework from my Alpha CB50. If you get a stupified response you have not found the right person yet.

Hi Guys.

May I say thanks to all your help in this matter. I used the trustcorgi website, and it had two drop downs - I selected pipework and then unvented. It listed 5 - 2 main companies (4 digit number) and 3 independants. I went with for an independant as I could of had a spotty teenager doing it with a guy just signing the paperwork... Only one answered and he answered all the questions I had competently. He has ordered the parts and should be doing it towards the start of next week.

Been out for a nice long walk - come back in to a nice warm house, and then it started getting cool.

Went into the garage, to find the LED's flashing alternative red green, no pressue in the central heating - checked outside to find ice at the end of the spout - not much - so I have cut this pipe on the inside of the garage. I have tried doing a reset with no luck - so here we are again - no hot water or central heating and holding for 20 minutes with british gas

****ish Gas are a waste of time on any complicated boiler-they are largely incompetent 6mth trained ex double glazing salesmen. I would suggest you contact Alpha themselves and get in contact with one of their agents.

Right, been onto BG - Told it would be Sunday for an engineer as they are very busy at this time of year - Dohhh!! I said employ some more engineers or pay more overtime....

I have cut the "overflow pipe" off and put it into a bucket in the garage to cure the freezing problem. Re-presurised from the filling loop and then the boiler started working (I done a bit of RTFM on myself). Now that it is discharging into the bucket, we have had 3/4 ltr go into it in an hour. This is after British Gas replaced the PRV on the central heating to fix the leak - which appears to have lasted all of 2 days and drained off all the pressure. After all this we will need to re-top with inhibitor but we won't be getting them to do that - heard how much they try to charge.

I will be contacting the local Alpha people tomorrow - I do know who they are, and I am seriously considering trying to get all the money back that I have paid to BG for their substandard service over the past 20 months - we basically didn't have an issue until we got them in

you pay all that money and they ****ed it up and left you in the lurch till sunday! Thats why they are known as ****ish gas. Would the aa say " sorry we can't attend your broken down vehicle for a few days because we're busy" ? Of course not. ****ish Gas have plenty of staff but they are unwilling to pay their overtime/callout money. Value for money? Is it ****.
