The general media has started up on the locals mainly related to any change in voting patterns which could be pretty severe as far as the Tory are concerned. Most councils are struggling. A couple of changes do have something to do with that
Since 2010 councils have seen their resources from central government fall by 40 per cent in real terms and will need to have made £20 billion of savings by April 2016. Although many of these have been efficiency savings, according to a survey carried out by the LGA in 2014, 60 per cent of councils that replied were considering stopping at least some key local services due to efficiency savings running out. This will have an effect on local government’s ability to improve people’s quality of life and support local businesses
Plus a more subtle change
Within this generally bleak picture, the introduction of business rates retention in April 2013 can be seen as a more hopeful feature. Before April 2013 all business rate income collected by councils formed a single, national pot, which was then distributed by government to councils in the form of formula grant. Through the Local Government Finance Act 2012, and regulations that followed, the Government gave local authorities the power to keep half of business rate income in their area by splitting business rate revenue into the ‘local share’ and the ‘central share’. The central share is redistributed to councils in the form of revenue support grant (in the same way as the previous formula grant) and in other grants. The local share is kept by local government1, but is also partly redistributed.
Great if an area has high business rate income. Not so good if they haven't with loads of shut high street shops etc. Add to that a comment that some shop in a poor area no longer pays any. In some areas this hasn't helped shops remain open. In many cases people mostly shop in large chains stores. Different areas are likely to have different needs. A poorer area for instance is likely to need more cash in certain services than others. Report from 2015

He has made it clear he will do anything to get into power, to do so he's decided he needs as much right media support as he can get, which in turn determines his policies. The only real difference between him and rishy is on public sector issues. Again precisely what bliar/brown did. Sensible centre left policies are dumped because he is terrified of not getting murdock’s support.

How Keith negotiates with murdock for his support is at least as important as how he negotiates with the conservative supporting electorate for their vote. There are unspoken pledges as well the ones in the manifesto.

This is a very predictable trope: “Starmer is scared, terrified”
It has nothing to do with emotions and everything to do with basic political strategy
Labour need convert 120+ seats to win, those are marginal seats where swing voters are needed to vote Labour.
It’s not hard to work out that swing voters are not going to be left wing
Given that Brexit and immigration are divisive subjects, it’s entirely sensible Starmer did want to support FOM..
Seriously Blup, you are almost certainly somebody that would moan about Corbyn getting destroyed by the media…..then here you are moaning that Starmer plays are careful game to avoid falling for media traps
Don’t know where that extra scared came from, perhaps cynically seeking power is a better term. He cannot be worse than the toreys but he will be a disappointment like Borris was to many. And bj had the media on his side.
We all know who's approaching the election running scared.
