Another Manchester stabbing

Manc United are based in Trafford. How come they are not called Salford United then? !
Because Salford is to the west of the river Irwell and Trafford is to the east. In short, wrong side of the river. And for those unaware, the River Irwell becomes the Manchester Ship Canal which is a strange beast in itself, since the River Mersey feeds into it briefly before feeding out of it. A very peculiar thing indeed, since it makes one wonder whether that section of the canal could ever flood.

So you are saying Manc Utd are based in Manchester?
They are based in Trafford, hence the reference to the ground being called "Old Trafford" ;) , which is an area within Greater Manchester (as indeed Salford is, although it didn't used to be and indeed it used to stretch as far as your fine city itself)

MANCHESTER...

It is a fair point asking why Manchester United is so called since it is in Trafford and under the auspices of Trafford County Council. After all, Greater Manchester does have Stockport County FC, Bury, Manchester City (which is in Manchester), Oldham Athletic, Wigan, Bolton etc etc etc all of whom operate within those particular councils/districts.
