OP, if it is Corgi HomePlan, call them again for a second opinion by a second engineer.

How do I know? I sometimes work for Corgi HomePlan and other insurance companies, I have been sent out for such things.

Brilliant, thanks again to everyone for the advice. I shall spend time organising a second opinion tomorrow and take it from there. Really good to know that despite it’s age the parts are still available should repairs be the most viable option.

Well second opinion was the way to go, absolutely nothing wrong with the boiler, no emissions or anything wrong with the flue or thermostat. Local independent gas registered engineer has confirmed all completely safe and we have paid for certification to say so...so can definitely say the engineer who condemned the boiler was an absolute con. Turns out when he turned off the boiler to condemn it he didn’t cap off the gas either. No more service plans for me local independent recommended people only from now on. Now to contact the service plan company....
