Hope someone can help please?

Am trying to connect a new bathroom light above the mirror. The one i removed had a pull cord to turn on and off, but my new light doesnt so i want to connect it to come on when i turn the main light on. When i removed the old light there were 5 cables; 2 blue, 2 brown and 1 yellow but the new light only has 2 spaces for wires. When we first connected it the light worked but would not turn off. What is the right combination of wires, as we have run out of ideas, and is it possible to connect it to come on with the main light?

Its an ikea light just in case that makes any difference.

Thanks

Kelly

Two browns, two blues and one yellow seems very unusual.

Could the yellow possibly be two bare earth wires sleeved with a green and yellow sleeve?

How were the wires actually connected?

I take it in the original light the two browns were together and the two blues were together. It is more than likely a permanent feed from the lighting circuit and also goes on from there to feed something else, perhaps a shaver socket ?
To make it operate with the main light would mean changing the line connection over to the switched line in the main light. This would also mean whatever else is fed on from the new light would also be switched - not too much of a problem if it just a shaver socket but needs investigating nonetheless.

the old light had a shaver socket attached to it (which only charged when the main lights were on). Apparently in the old light there were 5 positions which each took one wire (sorry im not very technical). the new light has not got a shaver, nor a switch to turn it on/off. The fact that there is only two holes for the wires has thrown us and we dont know which to connect.

The yellow wire is actually a green and yellow wire but not sure if there is two wires together in there.

Thanks

Can you check this? Its fairly safety-critical, especially in a bathroom. Does the copper core inside the sleeving emminate from the two cables?

And I think I'm being hopeful if I were to ask you if you have a multimeter and know how to use it . . .
