I have just moved into my house and the bathroom light was permanently on. I removed the pull switch to see what the problem was and it fell apart. I decided to leave the wires loose but not touching and buy a new pull switch. When I turned the electricity back on I was amazed to find the light is still on - how can this be!

How have you connected the wires?
Can be owing to various problems, depending on how it has been wired. Can you post a pic of the wires in the switch, the wires in the light fitting and if applicable, the wires in the fan?
See //www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=73320 for how to upload a pic

I haven't connected any of the wires as I can't buy a switch until tomorrow. The wires are hanging out of the ceiling (not touching) and yet the light is still on.

The wires in the switch are 1 grey and 1 red which were both connected to the same terminal and 1 red to another terminal, also a green connected to a separate terminal.

I'd be loathed to leave the live wires sticking out of the ceiling, can you put them in some chock block and screw the broken switch cover back up? That is an odd combination of wires, can you post some pictures?

I forgot to say that there is also an extractor fan in the bathroom but it hasn't worked at all since I moved in a week ago. Then two days ago the light in the bathroom just stayed on whether the switch was pulled or not. I thought there was a fault in the switch so I took it off to get a new one thinking this would disconnect the light.

But even though the switch is removed and wires in ceiling not connected the light was still on when i turned the power back on. There is a grey wire, 2 red wires and a green wire connected to the switch. The grey wire and 1 red wire were both connected to the same point, the other red wire connected to a different point. The green wire is connected to separate terminal on the ceiling part of the switch.

Can anyone help me with this, could the light have been wired permanently on and the switch was somehow turning it off, is this possible?!

I suspect the fan timer has failed and shorted out the permanent live and switched live and that these have been wired from ceiling rose to the fan.

Is there a fan isolated switch ? Often found outside the bathroom over the door. Has very wide switch. If there is turn this OFF and if the light goes off then the fan timer has failed.

But to correctly refit the pull cord switch a photo of the wires and inside of the celing rose will help to diagnsoe the problem.
