Shame on all you who clicked on this topic hoping for something racier...

My eldest (6) was enrolled at Beavers tonight.

I was surprised to see that "I promise....to love God" was still in the Promise.

Am I just a grouchy old Dad, or should there be a version for those who do not believe?

When I was a Brussell, the rule was that they all had to adhere to a monotheistic religeon, but it could be any one. Yes you are, and Yes there should.

BTW one year when I was in Colorado, I was sick and confined to bed for a few days. Lots of adverts on the local radio station from the off-licence in nearby Beaver Creek. Being in America, they didn't call it an "Off Licence" but a "Liquor Store".

Trade name was "Beaver Liquors"

I have a son in cubs and a one in scouts. They are expected to attend church parade for rembrance sunday, St Georges day and I think one other. I am an athiest and my kids don't really care about religion either way but my feelings are that if that is what is required then that is what you should do. Many cub and scout groups use church premises free of charge.

He should consider himself lucky. When I was a cub I used to have to go to church parade once a month, whether I liked it or not, atheism or different beliefs not being an available option in those days. Sitting on a hard seat for an hour listening to the Vicar drone on was absolute torture and I hated it

I once got out of it after much kicking and screaming at my mother only to get a copy of the newsletter saying they had a 99% turnout that month. Embarrased, not me, but boy did my ma tell me of for being the 1% trouble maker

In The Netherlands it's up to the group if they include this part of the promise (and that goes back to the years I was a Bronwie leader, so already 20 years ago).
I tthink having fun, getting lots of fresh air and learning something together is the most important bit of being a scouting member, hope he has lots of fun

Many years ago my son was one, and not long after he left, I happened to be walking past the hut just before they were turning out, and I saw one of the mums waiting who'd been friendly with my wife.

When I got home I told her I'd seen her, but I didn't know her name, and couldn't provide an accurate description.

My wife then asked me "what did her beaver look like?".

LMAO B-A-S! I used to be a Beaver leader    It's great for the kids and we used to do all sorts of fun stuff with them. As far as I know, the love God bit has always been a part of the promise - same as when the Cubs and Scouts get enrolled they swear allegiance to the Queen!

I went all the way from cub to venture scout leader, and as I remember the promise states that you should do 'your' duty to god and to the queen, I took that to mean it was up to me what my duty was, some scope for tolerance eh?
All said, the scout association is an excellent organisation and has admirable aims in this modern world, congrats to all your kids if they want to join :D

Yeah - I like doing fun stuff with beavers too.

Well - ignoring the republican arguments about the monarchy, in a way that's fair enough, as she is head of state, and it's not unreasonable for people to swear allegiance to the state if they are residing in it.

The monotheism worries me a lot more - not only does it discriminate against atheists, but from an actual religious intolerance POV it bars Hindus, for example, from joining, and that can't be right.

What monotheistic religions are there anyway that don't worship the same god as Judaism, Christianity and Islam?

Sun worshippers (no, not the ones laying in the sun on the beach) for instance

And the religions with only a Sun God, as opposed to ones with a Sun God as one of many in a pantheon are....?
