Best Stanley Knife or Equivalent?

I've got one of these silverline knives that I bought about 20 years ago, and it's still going strong!

I have loads of other knives too, but that is the go to one hanging in the shed

is there a better alternative than the classic Stanley?
Depends what you mean by 'classic'
Stanley 199 still the best available. Cheap, blades available everywhere.

Of course it's a fixed blade - but it would be. All retractable blade knives are unsafe crap, because the blade isn't securely fixed and never can be due to the retracting mechanism.

Yep I do not like the retractable ones - the only thing wrong with that 199 is it just needs a tool less screw to get to the new blades inside.

I had this for a few years until I threw it out with the cardboard I was cutting up with it. The blue section is softish and comfortable and it is angled at the end feels nice in the hand and it has a flip up ring on the screw to split it to get the spare blades. I just find it difficult to get hold of one now fro anywhere that I dont have to pay a big postage for. Or local place to buy one. I think I may of got it from screwfix.

How do you store them? You can hardly have it knocking around on the bench or in a tool box etc.

A friend is a general odd job builder, I used to sometime work alongside him, his preference is fixed blade stanley knife and his storage was just leave it lying round everywhere.
Loose in the cab of the van, or rolling about on the rickety scaffold tower were common places for it.

He once left his hammer on the roof of his car, and was walking up and down the verges looking for it!

I have a Stanley Fatmax: (which I can't find just now when I need it!!) It's retractable but with a big brass knob which will clamp it or open the body wherein lurks a nice plastic container holding about 10 spare blades. Nice and comfortable to hold.

That's the one I use good to use 2 handed when triming lead
