Boarding Out Stud Wall Advice

Also maybe just me but try an use as bigger piece of board you can which will mean less joints that may or may not crack. If you have two studs vertical and the board only goes half way up then add a stud horizontal at the meeting point between the top of one board and the bottom of the other, dont leave any floating edges.

you know that is an absolutly brilliant point about using bigger boards to prevent less joins, I hadn't even considered that. I absolutly dont want to be putting more horizontal joists in, as the PIR boards are already cut to size and installed. Ill live with the bigger boards....Ive got a 17 year old lad who I can hopefully drag in off his xbox to help!

The board size you use will also depend on the spacing of your studs. If using 2400 x 1200 board you need studs at 400 centres, if using 1800 x 900 then 450 centres. I've always used square edge board - you get square edges anyway when you cut pieces. Look for special plasterboard screws - they have a "bugle" head, not a countersunk head. They are also often phillips instead of pozidrive, so do use the correct tip!

If you are skimming it matters not whether you use taper or square edge - scrim tape the joints and get skimming. If you are DIYing are you going to have a go at skimming? It's not impossible for a DIYer to get a reasonable surface....

I think the taper edge thing is if you want to tape and fill the taper and then just paint the plasterboard without any skim.
I think the OP mentioned "his plasterer"

@hamd01 you did not mention the room it will be, but any radiators or anything you will be hanging on the wall - do yourself a favour and add extra wood in those areas to screw into.

My studs are 400, so Ill go with the 2,400 x 1,200.

Im still up in the air about skimming....not sure. I have done plastering before, one wall at our last house. The finish was really good, but ill be honest the stress and physical labour nearly killed me. Wife was supposed to be pitching in and helping so I can get it on quickly....she wandered off half way through!!!

Ive watched a lot of videos about the Dalapro Roll-On plaster. Looks like it takles the stress away from mixing, so I thought I might give that a go....douby ill get a plasterer in before Christmas.

Thank you. It is quite a large room and has 3 rads....I've sister studded across where those rads are hanging, as well as where the tv is going to hopefully provide some extra support.
