I don't think Hamas or their PLO predecessors had any illusions about winning a fair fight with the might of Israel and their wealthy, well armed backers.
They could always negotiate peacefully I guess and ask Netanyahoo nicely, to stop demolishing their homes, building on their territory and controlling their infrastructure....? My guess is that it won't work.
