Thanks johnwr for your explanation of how the seals work in the master cylinder and can appreciate when the foot pressure is relaxed slightly how the brake fluid can seep pass them if there is a tear or slight deformity in the shape of the seals. It also explains why the brakes appears to work when you want to stop the car, greater pressure is used and even a slightly deformed seal is forced to do its job and seal. Again many thanks johnwr.
