The whole point is that brexiteers are apparently adamant that they knew what they were voting for.As Notch has said, millions of people didn't vote for the mess. I don't see why government's uselessness on the paperwork of people who have a valid and legal reason to be here can be a brexiteers fault. Why would any sane, rational person want people's lives to be turned upside down in this manner? I certainly don't think that 17 million people would want this.
People who voted leave, even though some of them may be because they were worried about the levels of immigration and free movement, didn't mean and doesn't mean they are racist or bigots as you like to call them.
Heck, even the Archbishop of Canterbury said that people being worried about immigration shouldn't be labelled as racist and said that the fear was a valid emotion. I'm not a religious sort but he had a point and more impressively, I thought it was an attempt for people to understand fears and to keep talking.
Whether the government is screwing up by accident or by design is irrelevant.
(personally I don't think the deliberate destruction of documents, non acknowledgement of their own documents that remain, or applying for an immigration data opt-out is an 'accident')
And the consquences of the end of free movement were spelt out for them before the referendum.
So either they didn't care or they didn't understand!
If you are saying that many weren't aware of these consequences (along with the true financial implications), then surely the logical thing would have been to have had a referendum on the principle of leaving and then get another say on the reality of the 'deal'?
If that one referendum shapes the destiny of this country for decades to come, then brexiteers must shoulder the responsibilty of the injustices that millions will suffer!
