Tried to log on to diynot shortly after watching this 'documentary' following the 10 teenagers as they attempt to build the luxury flat..... but all I got was 'page unavailable' - was this a log jam in the area cos everybody here was trying to talk about it, I wonder..............?

Regards, Graham

Not sure,

Our hosting company had some issues with their network yesterday which meant intermittent problems, aside from that all should have been well on the site, as far as I'm aware. :)

he must have made quite a few attempts at putting that plasterboard up, because there were quite a few holes, not just the one through one piece of cable

I felt sorry for him. Why was he not granted compassionate leave in his circumstance ? I felt his "collegues" showed an incredible lack of empathy / maturity, the guy was very obviously dying on the job. Sad I thought. Yeah he did co*k up big style though, but F*ck it was just a few wires.

I don't know if you saw the programme, but the background was that 6 or 7 basically unemployable teenagers without any / many qualifications and with absolutely no previous experience in the build trade, have to completely build a luxury appartment from stratch in 26 weeks.

Along the way, the aim is that they obtain the necessary skills to allow them to enter the building trade.

You know its the same old format reheated in a different way.

Anyhow the guy in question, certainly wasn't the sharpest tool in the box, and certainly had a bit of an attitude. A couple of days previous to the incident in question, his mother had suddenly died. The five (?) holes he made were in a bundle of 5 cables behind a piece of plasterboard he was putting up, inexcusible, but his mind was clearly nowhere near the job in hand, he shouldn't have been working, possibly his supervisor who was aware of his bereavement, shouldn't have allowed him on site. My sympathy was with him not because of his cock up but 'cos none of his co workers seemed to give a stuff about his situation.

No I'm not a sparky, and hopefully not a bank lacky for much longer. :D

No giving up commuting, had enough of 4 hours a day on trains, can't stand the job anymore, don't get paid enough, all in all not very satisfactory  Maybe I'll become a sparky, I mean how difficult is it to drill through a few wires :D

Cannot imagine that sort of travel time !!

I used to commute near 50 mile a day, early mornings, an enjoyable 25 min drive ... evenings, about 40 mins through country roads.... piece of cake compared to 4 hrs on train !! Best of luck with it. :)

The bad thing is that the "main" part of the journey takes about 32 mins, it used to take 6 mins to drive to the station, it now takes 20. I can't (well won't) park at the station as the charges here have increased from 1.20 a day to 4.00 a day in 3 years. Then the nightmare bit occurs, I have to get from north london to south london. This easily takes 45 minutes for a journey of about 3 miles, I've timed it, and yes you can pretty much walk it in that time. It's all just too much now. I can't believe I'm the only one in this position, I just wonder what is going to happen when they build the 500k to 600k new homes, they whole south east will just explode.

This'll make you laugh though I downloaded to documents I need to apply for a visa to Adelaide today. Seriously thinking of giving the whole country the heave ho, whilst I'm young enough.

Making me cry rather than laugh mate cos I'm too old now.

The overcrowding problems you mention will only get worse in the future.

If you fancy it abroad give it a try otherwise you may regret it when you are older.

You can always come back if it all goes wrong which is unlikely anyway. :)

I'll let you all know how it goes. The wife would be made up, she absolutely detests the English climate.
