Didn't you keep track of how much was outstanding each month and think "hmm i'd better phone up and make a payment / up the standing order before it gets to hundreds"
Proper financial sense .... check the usage, calc the cost, earmark the outstanding dosh in your high interest BS account each month, end of year pay up and pocket the interest earned... A small amount for one person, but horrendous cost to the supplier over tens of thousands of customers - supplier must be making a fortune for it not to be a worry !!
Not being rude, but tis foolish to consume, knowingly underpaying, then complain about the mounting debt ....
