Not necessarily, near the gas burning appliance is best, why have it at the other side of the house so around the appliance becomes toxic untilm the levels around the alarm are met and it's activated.
Surely an RGI would know this?

Don't care what instructions say, I suggest you read the advantica research commissioned by the HSE into CO build up in domestic properties. Putting a CO alarm away from the source is about as much use as a smoke alarm by the fire exits. What's the point? It's too late by the time it goes off or does common sense not factor neither?
So boiler is downstairs but put the alarm outside your bedroom door???? Alarm activation at say 50ppm, thus downstairs levels will be sustantially higher... Route of exit therefore through dangerous levels. Bright idea.

Smoke alarm downstairs? Same principle, that's why the dB level is designed to wake 99% of people.
