broken ring circuit

I ripped out the wiring from a dividing wall that I am knocking down. The wiring formed part of a ring circuit. I failed to make note of all the connections embedded in the wall (there were some boxes covered with blanking plates).

Now I am left with 6 twin and earth cables hanging out of the ceiling with no idea how to connect them back up again to get a working circuit.

This is a single storey extension with a flat roof and no easy access to the wiring. Unfortunately I snipped the cables close to the roof void and there is no slack in them to pull them through

Have I made a big job for my electrician to fix, or does this sound like a simple fix?

I am sure it would have been a whole lot simpler if I had just called him out in the first place. A lesson learned from getting carried away!

You certainly have not made it any easier for your electrician - but there's really no alternative to getting him to do whatever if necessary to redeem the situation!

Quite so!

Impossible to say, without seeing how much of a horlicks you have made!

An electrician is needed to determine the two "ends" of the ring and to join these together through any intermediate power locations that you may require.
Also to confirm that any loose ends are not still live, and are safe.

Having done that he will need to carry out continuity, insulation resistance and ring integrity tests to ensure that the ring is indeed still a ring and that it is safe to put back into service.

Thanks for your replies. I will get someone in to sort it out.

To add insult to injury, after removing the plaster from the wall I found that the wall is tied into a column supporting an RSJ. I had assumed it was just a non supporting breeze block wall.

Looks like I will need to get a builder and an electrician in now!

There's me trying to save time and money. What a numpty!

Building regs???

Thanks - yes, I realise I need building control approval for electrics and structural work. Better get it fixed sharpish before I get into trouble!!

I don't know if there is any other electrical work involved - but mending a destroyed (but existing) sockets circuit would not, in itself, be 'notifiable'. The structural work is probably a different matter!

Thanks John - Luckily I haven't pulled the wall down yet, so I will leave it as it is. As far as the electrics go, I have no immediate need for the circuit that I destroyed. The only thing I am worried about is leaving it in the state it's in for any length of time. Not sure where I stand regarding regs and buildings insurance, but guessing it's not good to leave it in case I need to make a claim for whatever reason.
