Hi, my phone has developed a crackling noise and the broadband connection drops the connection alot. When I use the phone the connection picks up again.

BT want £115 if the fault is inside our house.

Before I give the go ahead I wanted to check our wiring internally. It all seems fine apart from the cable is joined at two seperate places over the cable run in the loft. Would this cause the problem? The connections are all sound.

Many thanks for any replies.

To save you money, disconnect all internal wiring. Connect your modem directly to the main socket.

Does it still drop out?

If so, BT are liable. If not, you need to look for the fault. As a general rule, it is best to wire any circuit with the bare minimum of joints. If you have got faulty internal wiring, take the opportunity to rewire the phone sockets, looping from the Master to the first extension socket and so on. Avoid junction boxes altogether.

Hi Securespark, thanks for your reply, have now done that and I have also removed the bottom part of the BT socket and plug the socket directly in.

Still dropping, but again when I dial out on the phone the broadband picks up!

With all the internal wiring disconnected it leaves the following:

Drop wire connections outside the house
Two junction boxes inside the loft for the cable run

Nightmare!

make sure the connections are tight in the junction boxes, when they are and the line still drops out call BT.

BT try to "scare you" because quite often it really is something after the master socket and why should they pay for your error. BUT that is why you can unplug your extensions from the incoming line, if the poblem is still there after you unplug the extensions then it is B.T.'s problem.

I had them out, problem turned out to be the "big junction box" on the pole over the road, BT bloke said my connections were a bit naff because the lid had come off so they got wet. (along with a few others) but yes BT fixed it all for "free" (its part of their service)

The exact same thing happened to me, I could ditto the above post.

Got the BT man coming out next week, now checked all internal wires... seems OK, but I wanted to make sure first.
