It would be helpful to know why this happened
You said the builder provided a comprehensive quote, which gives me the impression he is a main contractor employing office staff with QS etc - that means high overheads and thus high hourly rates
Youve not said what the quality of work is like or how well the project is managed - if both are good then maybe you are paying a premium for achieving a high quality finish
