Car insurance renewal

ALways always phone them and beg. One of their call handlers was surprisingly candid - the longer you give them to work on your quote, the lower it'll go.
"Eh?"??
They said while I was waiting that it's the same at all call centres, they'd worked for others. I made some sort of admirational noises and they came back with an offer very confident that I wouldn't be able to beat it, and they were right. It was something like a third off. How the hell that can happen I don't know.
It's worked for that last 2-3 years. Direct Line.

Damn, should try that I am with LV and it's gone up by £100 and I just thought tis inflation.

I'm with LV for home and car insurance.

Phone providers, insurance and etc., usually expect you to have had an alternative, cheaper quote from another company, as a bargaining point.

We're with LV for one of our cars. Last year, with two of us covered, 2017 Audi A3 black edition, fully comp, two 'incidents' noted, business use and protected NCD we paid £241. This year - £333. Cheeky buggers, I thought, I’ll go elsewhere. Went on to a comparison site and the best price I could get was…..£503. I take back what I said about LV.
Just had the renewal through for the Golf. £220 fully comp last year. This year, £350. Tried a quote with T.P.O. - £500. Tried a specialist giving 'special' prices for NHS workers (Mrs M), - £576.

My other half did the phoning up and begging with LV. It worked. Can’t remember how much she got off but it was better than the next alternative.

Mine went up to ~£340 this year. Decided to do the Compare the Market thing and got it for ~£220 (same cover) which is enough of a saving in my view to justify the time looking for a cheaper quote.

When I phoned my existing provider they said 'let's have a look to see if we can improve your quote' to which I had to advise I'd already taken out the new quote and was phoning to cancel with them.

I know they're businesses, I know they're there to make money whilst providing a service, however my view is if you can get my quote down, why wasn't this done automatically prior to sending out my renewal quote.

Some do take the p**. One of my quotes was £2k most of the others were <£800. I think EVs are getting a bit of a spanking at the moment. Particularly the quicker ones.

You should never let them auto-renew, then you don't have to cancel, plus each year they know they have to compete for your business.

Auto renewal doesn't overly bother me tbh. I get the obligatory email a month or so before the renewal date along with the revised pricing. If I deem it too much, I look around to see if there's better to be had.

yep few companies dropping out of insuring electric vehicles same as anyone trying to insure a range rover in london

Just opened my van insurance renewal, gone down from £338 to £313.

I wasn't expecting that.

My Zafira Tourer was £330 last year. Over the past 18 months or so, I had 2 rear shunts with both cars written off and no fault attached. When it came to renewal, (Aegis), it came in at over £680 for this year. When I asked why, they said I had been involved in 2 incidents. I replied, I was not involved, I was hit from behind and it was confirmed I was 100% blameless. They said the quote still stood.
Went through a few of the comparison sites and they were coming back at over £500+, so looked at companies individually.
Axa came back with £287 including free legal cover. All others charge about £30+ for this.

Just gave them a try. £527. Tried taking me off the policy, £587! That leap from £220 to £350 from the existing insurer is starting to look attractive!
