The rate of Covid-19 in circulation during wave 1 was lower than wave 2, and possibly lower than now.I'm not worried that I will die of Covid-19, if I was ever going to die of it, it would have happened in the first wave when I took absolutely zero precautions. By the time of the second wave, I already knew what exactly to be worried about.
The original variant was half as dangerous and half as infectious. So you're more likely to end up in hospital and more likely to catch it given the same level in circulation.
During wave 1 others were taking precautions even if you weren't. Now very few are taking precautions.
The only way your risk might be lower now is if you've been vaccinated and thanks to better treatments, or if you were previously infected and survived. Otherwise it's higher.
