My cats have used the pipe insulation on the pipe that leads from my condensing boiler (in my unheated garage) to the drain as a scratching post and all but removed it, i am going to renew it as i have read what can happen if it freezes solid.
I want to protect the pipe insulation so they cannot do it again, as the outside diameter of the insulation is 48mm would i be able to get something that would fit over it once it is in place, i was thinking of something like a square pipe with one side removed or square guttering if that is possible in that size or something like that.
Can anyone give me some suggestions other than shoot the cats?
Thanks in advance.

Perhaps get some round rainwater downpipe and cut a split along one side.

Force it over the bare pipe and THEN feed insulation DOWN from above!

I assume you only need to protect say 1m above the floor!

The pipe is 220 CM long and unfortunitly runs around the end of the garage wall to the drain, it has 3 different lengths with 3 x 90 degree joints in it.

Would something like this do the job if i could find it close to the size of the outside diameter of the insulation, i am not very good at DIY so i was hoping just to cable tie it to the pipe once i had renewed the insulation. (fortunately it doesn't have to look good just function)

Would it be possible just to remove the pipe from the bottom of the boiler and put a bucket under it , we use the garage every day as the washer and dryer are in there so emptying it wouldn't be a problem, do you know roughly how much water a boiler produce per hour is it a trickle or quite a lot?

You still need to insulate the pipe

Why not then box it in if you like diy.

yes i know, the O/D of the insulation is 48mm the pipe (in the picture) is 50 mm so providing i can get hold of it at my local DIY store in the 50mm size i was hoping i could simply put the square pipe over the newly installed insulation and cable tie it into place.

I am not good at DIY so am looking for an easy fix if possible.

Any thoughts on removing the pipe from the bottom of the boiler (see edited to my post above)

2-3 ltrs/hr but there are safety issues as well depending on the boiler, so not always advisable.

OK thanks, i will go back to plan A and see if i can get some of the guttering in the picture, if anyone else has any suggestions i would welcome them.

Spray the insulation with some "keep off" deterrent spray available at most pet shops

I am sorry you did not like my drainpipe solution.

As an alternative wind some silver duct tape around the outside of the insulation in a spiral direction.

Its commonly called "duck" tape because its now made in China and they cannot say the word "duct" properly!

I always thought is was because it was made in Stoke on Trent :D
