It's amusing that you think that being on the inside, with a strong voice and influencing the organisation, isn't a benefit.

Perhaps you're one of those Farage nutters who think the EU is run by evil alien goblins. It is of course run by representatives of the constituent countries, for the benefit of those constituents.

because, at the moment, UK is within the EU, and so is attractive and convenient to other EU countries; and to foreign countries wishing to deal with the EU; and to other non-EU countries whose Financial companies wish to set up a presence in the EU, especially if their employees are better at speaking English than French or German.

This will obviously cease if we resign from the EU.

Additionally, as the UK is a major member of the EU, it has a strong voice and influence in framing the rules, and can negotiate at the conference table for the benefit of UK interest.

The people who run the EU are
1) MEPs elected by the citizens of the constituent nations, and ministers and representatives from those nations,
or
2) Evil alien goblins

I'm sure it is generally recognised that, for financial services in particular (which in the UK is bigger than our entire manufacturing industry), EU countries will only trade in a country that obeys EU regulations.

Countries outside the EU do not have a hand in deciding what those regulations should be, and they are not framed for the benefit of outsiders.

According to 71% of all members of the Confederation of British Influence (CBI), and 67 per cent of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the EU has had an overall positive impact on their business.

The CBI estimates that the net benefit of EU membership is worth 4-5% of GDP to the UK, or £62bn-£78bn per year.

In 2014, the ONS reported that the EU, which is the world’s biggest economy, accounted for 44.6 per cent of all UK exports of goods and services, and 53.2 per cent of the UK’s imports of goods and services.

Meanwhile, the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) shows the overall contribution to our economy from exports to the EU was £187 billion last year, and that it could rise by almost half again to £277 billion a year by 2030.

It also claims access to European energy, transport and digital service markets, combined with new global trade deals, could add £58 billion to the UK economy every year by 2030, the equivalent to £1,000 per British citizen.

It's clear from jock's post that the European nations forming the EU need to continue working together for the benefit of all. If the UK, which is one of the larger European nations, isolates itself by leaving, it will not only be worse for RUK, but also for the rest of Europe.

Co-operation among equals is vital.

It's a funny thing that some anti-EU campaigners like to pretend that the EU was set up as a mighty empire by force of conquest, and held down by massive armies, like the Soviet Union and its satellites. This is completely wrong. It is obviously a dishonest debating trick.

One of the Trolls tried it earlier, but was unable to provide examples to match the Soviet forced collectivisation of farms, the man-made famine in Ukraine, the extermination of a generation of educated Poles, or the archipelago of gulags.

These extravagant and untrue allegations by anti-EU campaigners convince no-one.

Quite the reverse, it was initiated by men who had lived through the greatest and most destructive war the world has ever seen. The older of them had also lived through the second greatest war the world has ever seen. Their greatest goal was to make a recurrence impossible.

Of course an isolationist UK would lose trade if it exits the EU, no sensible person can deny that. In order to continue exporting into the EU, the UK will have to meet EU regulations. No sensible person can deny that. The EU regulations will be drawn up for the benefit of the EU members, and an isolated U K, no longer being one, will have no power in framing them. No sensible person can deny that.

It is particularly relevant to the financial services sector, which in the UK is bigger than our entire manufacturing sector. Currently, as one of the largest members of the EU and having the largest financial sector, we take a leading role in framing the rules, and have been able, for example, to block a transaction tax. If we leave, we will lose that. There are plenty of other European centres eager to take up the slack. As you know, Switzerland has recently had to agree to obey EU laws on banking and tax, despite not being a member and having no influence on them.

Britain and Europe are stronger together.
