Hello - Hoping someone might be able to offer some pointers.




Bought an old 2006 1.4 Doblo Dynamic petrol car. Car initially took a few goes to get started from cold, but was okay starting from warm.




After a few days the engine light came on. It kept cutting out when trying to get started from cold, and tool longer each time. Still okay when warm.





I disconnected the MAP sensor in order to get home from a trip away, and the car ran normally.





Ran the scanner and the codes P0101, P0105, P0106 came up.





Bought a new MAP sensor and thought it was okay, but then the car lost power and I had to keep restarting. I’ve never experienced limp mode before, but it felt like that was happening.





Thought that the sensor I ordered might be wrong, so I’ve ordered another one anyway, which I’ll test when it arrives.





When I start the engine with the sensor disconnected it starts but does smell strongly of petrol.





I had a service inc oil filter change last month after buying the car, and it says on the receipt that the air filter was also changed. I also had the end section of the exhaust replaced.





Can anyone offer any advice? I’m new to diagnosing problems, but good at fixing things once I know. Just need practice at the former! I need to try to fix it myself.

Hello! Yes, I did clear the codes and they did reappear. The P0101 code mentioned air mass - see attached pic. Any advice on how to investigate? There’s a serious lack of manuals or online mechanical info for the Mk 1 1.4 petrol Doblo.

Yes, there are three different codes. I’d just like to know what to investigate, if anyone has any ideas. Thank you for the suggestions thus far.
 
Start from basics. How many miles it done?

Have spark plugs been replaced?

What brand sensor have you bought? If it's not an O. E 1, throw it away and buy the genuine 1. Poor quality aftermarket sensors waste more time and money than they are worth. Often masking the fault because you think a new working sensor is fitted
 
130,000 miles. A lot for a petrol engine, I know, but it only cost me £600, which was my tiny budget.

I’ll check the paperwork re. spark plugs. Thanks for the tip.

First sensor I bought was Bosch, and I thought all was well, because the engine light went out, but after driving for a couple of minutes it lost power. I restarted the engine, and it was okay again, but again lost power after a few minutes.

The second sensor said OEM, but it was cheap, so perhaps chucking it might be the better option.
 
Your P101 fault mentions the Manifold Air Flow sensor issue - A MAF issue.

I'm not that familiar with modern petrol engines, but I would not expect either problem to affect the cold starting.
 
Thank you. I found that that once I disconnected the MAP, it started immediately (still does). When I fitted the new one, it also started without cutting out, but as I say, lost power. I did buy a MAF as well, in order to test, but I was sent an electric window button by mistake :)

I wonder if the cold start and the subsequent loss of power are separate issues. Oh dear…
