WD40 works temporarily but can cause long-term issues in locks. Prolonged use can leave the lock mechanism dry and susceptible to sticking.
While graphite is a better option than WD40, it can turn gloopy if rain or moisture gets in the lock. Out of the many solutions I've tried, Abus PS88 lock lubricant is the best. It works even better than graphite.
