Corgi

That doesn't make me an installation company. The wording is obviously aimed at cowboy contractors installing CH etc.

Other than that you only need be a 'competent person'.

Read the law and see what it says rather than what you want it to say.

joe

That's your interpretation. I can remember one case where a landlord and his plumber/mate did some gas work that got one of them 2 years inside. And it was just a bit of gas pipework. (Mind you I think it was plastic)

Well I do think this post has made good reading.
But what BAS has just posted, does not mention the DIYer.
Now BAS dont shot me Im only saying as I see it.
I did install a new gas fire & in the post that I placed about that I was sarcastic in saying I tested for leaks using a match (that is the proper way isnt it, well it used to be).

He may have been DIYing, but he wasnt doing it for himself. I think this gets back to what Joe-90 was saying[/quote]

I'm sorry I don't follow what you are saying. I made my point in the long post at the end of page 3. As for the landlord above, he thought he was competent no doubt.

It doesn't matter whether you are Corgi or not if you are incompetent.

Doing the job wrong proves anyone incompetent regardless of whether they belong to a trade association.

It does in one respect. If you are CORGI and you do it wrong, the customer may get some redress.

In a way the law says the reverse of your first statement. You are deemed competent if you can join the CORGI club. If you subsequently do something incompetently, you will lose your club membership.

have to say im intrigued by this one. ive sent an e-mail to corgi to see what they say

Cobblers. British Gas engineers are Corgi in their working hours but not out of them. Are you saying that they become incompetent on the weekends?

No but as you pointed out they aren't CORGI registered "at weekends", it's their employer that is registered and holds the insurance. So their work is illegal. Do you expect them to give you a receipt with their CORGI reg number on for work they do at "weekends"? Do you expect their employer (BG) to guarantee their work? Do you expect they will still be working for BG after being caught doing this more than a few times?

I expect them to be a 'competent person' so can install gas appliances.
Either they are competent or they are not - which is it?

It is merely your interpretation that my words are nasty. From my point of view they are factual - who else but a dunce would repeatedly post information about web sites that bear no relationship to the law, and persistently decline to read the law?
YAwWwwWwwNNnn . This is where I got my unadulterated, dunce like stupidity from. Can you show me where it states that an unqualified, non corgi, diy householder can do gas fitting in his own home WITHout building control. Which was my original query as I thought you were somehow an authority on gas works  wot a joke.
