Interesting point, would they or wouldn't they. Most of the coal is in places with a very strong industrial heritage and very high levels of unemployment. We are probably only talking about another 10-15 years before this becomes economically viable and it's politically desirable already to break our dependence on foreign energy. There might still be enough of a cultural tradition to get them back down there, it was always a macho job and human nature never changes
We need more alternative resources and research into them...Nestor, see they are mining oil-rich sands in Canada 24/7 huge industry...the new black goldrush!
Still not sure about nuclear as the toxic waste problems and potential Chernobyls/terrorist attacks, but if non-fossil fuels technolgies improved could not only benefit us, but for a price, the rest of the world with lower risks. It is happening, but people making too much money with present status quo to be too concerned with pushing it.
