My local one, C2C, is perfect. Trains always clean and on time. Why the hell that needs renationalising is beyond me.

Why can’t they renationalise the failing water and energy companies? When the transport minister was asked that question, her only answer was that it wasn’t in the manifesto. Well it f'cking should be!

I don't know if nationalising the railway will improve services and save money, but we must remember that the contractors have enjoyed some crazy terms which makes them winners in all cases.
During pandemic London underground lost 90% of revenue but the shareholders still had to extract money from the budget, they don't care if the company is not making a profit.
That's why there's a £3billion hole in tfl accounts.
That's what I've been told by an RMT high rank official, so it might be a biased view.

I sort of get your point.

But you only want failed companies renationalised? Just want the public to pick up the debts.

The franchises RUN the services but they don't actually own the service - so NO money changes hands so its not re-nationalising

Last year about £26 billion was paid from UK taxes for railway network and services by us tax payers.

How come other European governments own and run successful rail services at a much lower cost to the public?

And who owns most of the UK rail franchises?

Foreign companies and governments, and some are registered in tax havens!

Well our C2C runs perfectly. New rolling stock being added all the time too. It couldn’t be run any better so if the government are taking it over, what do they plan to do - bring prices down?

The franchises are run by companies, they don’t own them. Huge difference, hence why it’s very misleading for Labour to say that they are being renationalised

They were all nationalised during Covid when they basically went bust.

It’s mainly a paper exercise to rebrand.

so very misleading for Conservatives to say they were privatised

TfL initially hoped to make an operating surplus of £161m this financial year – after making a historic first surplus of £138m in 2023/24 – but that is now predicted to be a more modest £23m by next April.

I see some on here are fully briefed on the current politics of rail renationalisation.

Will rail fares get cheaper after nationalisation?

No. In the Budget on 30 October, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced that regulated fares would rise in January by 4.6%.
With inflation currently at 2.3%, travelling by train will cost more in real terms.

Will rail nationalisation save public money?

The government says ending the payments to private sector operators will save £150m a year.

Judging by some of the nonsense I've read on here in the last few days, I think DIYnot is vying for the title of Conspiracy Theorists of the year.

Love this, the government criticised for not meeting a promise that wasn't in their manifesto!

The difference between privatised services and nationalised ones is profit. Profit isn't a concern with nationalisation so a saving sll round

I have friends whom work in higher positions at TfL, yes, the covid reduction in trade has left a black hole, but who are the sharehoders that you refer to? AFAIK, there are no private shareholders in London Underground.
