Defra messed up for the farmers ..

... the situation had not only put local farmers through a terrible ordeal; it had cost the country financially as well.
"On top of the administrative costs, which amount to almost £100 million, there is the estimated cost to the farmers themselves of approximately £20 million in interest and bank charges," he said.
"However, the real horror story is that we will have to carry a debt of £131 million pounds that the European Union will now refuse to hand over as a penalty for the Government's incompetent handling of this issue.
"All in all, due to the total incompetence of this Government and its handling of the Single Farm Payments, the cost to us all amounts to almost £250 million."...

Defra budget cuts...

..Environment Secretary David Miliband was told to "get a grip" on his department's budget yesterday after figures revealed that Defra has spent more than £170m on management consultants since 2002/3... "This sum of money is almost as large as the cuts that Defra is currently making in key services like flood defences, waterways and veterinary inspection to prevent threats to public safety.
"David Miliband must now get a grip on his department's budget."

Millibrand looks and sounds competent doesn't he? Hopefully not Flattering to decieve... wouldn't hold breath on it tho'..
Ms Beckett was there before him until she was promoted up, out of the way perhaps..
