dettering cats

Coleus canina small shrub advertised in newspaper recently. I saw it in a local (big) garden centre too, so it shouldn't be too hard to get hold of. Haven't tried it myself cos I've got 3 cats of my own.

gcol, thanx for advice, time and a place for everything though... this might actually be the time and place!!!
tigger thanx i'm going to look into it, i actually like cats but have a 2 and a half year old child and pregnant girlfriend both of which i don't want going near the cats, the cat is also obsesed with eating half it's latest catch at my front door, not to clever when children want to pick up everything.

Try a water pistol. Get a good, high-powered one. They hate being got with them and, after a week or so, should start to stay away.

This approach has several benefits:

1. It is effective (always good)
2. It is good fun, even if you like cats, as you can hide in the undergrowth like a big kid
3. It gives you an excuse to hang out in Toys R Us to choose the biggest, best pistol/rifle/Ghostbusters-type kit available.

I had a neighbours cat that kept sunning itself in my front garden (after spraying **** everywhere that is). It got a bucket full of water dunked on it from the upstairs bedroom window. It didn't like it much. ;)

I used those ultra sonic cat deterrants, they work a treat but i got fed up of replacing the batteries every month.

I too bought a water gun and that also works. My girlfriend works for the RSPCA and brings lots of injured birds home and you wouldnt believe the cats that come into the garden after a free lunch. My advice would be to put a bit of cheap aftershave in the water because cats hate getting any kind of scent on them!

The only problem with those is that some people (like me) can hear them (or rather, can sense them) and its really, really upsetting! I had a relative who used one and I just couldn't visit as it made me feel ill. So, while it keeps cats away it also keeps some people away. You may see this as an added benefit!
