Hi i have a friend who has a potterton fireside 51 thats just been told the gas valve is done in (pilot on no burner, thermostat working)and that you can't get a replacement for it.

So does anyone know any where that would over haul this or anyone local to motherwell who could supply anf fit an alternative valve (been told that you might be able to fit and alter a different one.

Thanks

Robert

You cant fit any gas valve that is not approved by the manufacturer.
Repairing them can be a nightmare, if it is just the solenoid you might be able to change it. Also you would struggle to find someone who would strip it down and repair it as again all parts need to be approved. Its not worth the time consider 2 hours to strip and overhaul the valve, call out fee, return visit, time taken to source valve components , this would put the repair cost at somewhere around 500 quid.

Is it a red and white push button valve ?
If so then the solenoid operator can be changed readily avialable

Thanks for the replies managed to get over for a look this morning, the solenoid is away on it, and as to the valve its a Honeywell 2 button but grey and white and double the size of a current Honeywell valve.

Turns out the appliance is around 41-42 years old with the Town gas labels and this is the first thing to ever go on it, pity that the parts are obsolete.

Will need to try and get him a new system on a help\grant scheme (anyone know of any he is 64 and has a partial disabled son).

Thanks

Robert

standard honeywell operator should fit on it cost about 45 quid.

Re grants have a look on energy saving trust web site

Should be some kind of grants available for the auld yin Rab.
As soon as the coffin dodgers start asking about grants, I'm oot the door as quick as a Celt fan seeing soap!!!

tell the old chap to phone age concern as they will know what optoins he'sa got, cos if the boiler is 40 years+ would it be advisable to repair as most likely to contue to have issues and possibly in the cold weather too, gotta feel sorry for people in that boat if they've not got two pennies to ub together!
