No, it's the way it always used to be done.

But if you're installing a new light, with a switch, why not go through the switch to the light, rather than cable to the light and then back to the switch?

in response to your point, I've wired a few lights already using the principle I outlined and I thought it would be good to keep consistent throughout the house. It's a total re-wire.

does that make sense?
 
You can use a junction box if you prefer, or if it's easier.

A maintenance-free one is needed if the jb is not accessible.

No - neither approach is wrong per se.

There's no reason, per se, why this light should be wired in the same way as all the rest.

What makes sense, IMO, is to do things in the most sensible and appropriate way, rather than thinking that there is some benefit in doing everything the same way.
