True, it was a pair of stockings, I seem to recall the cost of a pair of replacement stockings was about the same price as a new fan belt.

Repairs were much easier to access then. I fitted a new main and a/c belt at home a few years ago, at home with access to a full toolkit. It took me all of five hours and a lot of ingenuity. Some of my early cars, I could sit on the wing, legs dangling down the side of the engine. Now, it's a struggle to even get a hand down between the bits of engine.

I remember my hillman avenger..... starter motor kept on sticking..... 1lb hammer and a few taps would sort it out....

I used to drive an Escort that did that. I was always leaping out and cracking the starter with a lump hammer to get it going!
Oddly (and pointlessly), I can still remember the reg...B429 RVM....

Probably memory, I had a D reg Hunter that was 66, F reg Cortina, 68, H reg Moggy 70

Nope, if that was the case, the B would be last.

OK.. I thought the single letters were only used after the 3N + 3L ran out in 62/63.

I had a 63 Cortina, which would have been an A, but the local authority hadn't yet run out of the 3N + 3L ones.
