I've got to say, the insulation tape I've used from wholesalers does seem to work and not drop off.
Came across something I'd wrapped in tape 21 years ago, and in good nick.
I imagine if I unwrapped it all it would be a sticky mess though...

I just hope you weren't using it for insulation purposes though - to the best of my knowledge it does not comply with 412.2.1.2 or .3
