Hello

Ive just bought a house that was empty for about 10 years.

The electric hob and electric oven both do not work. They are both connected to one cooker point. Both cables test live using my non-contact detector pen so I assume the hob and oven are faulty.

My question is surely its not likely that they both broke at the same time?

Could there be an electrical fault that did brake them both at the same time? or could there be an electrical fault even though my non-contact detector pen says the cables are live? Maybe 10 years of no use might stop the hob and oven from working.

Just wondered if anyone had any ideas before I go to the expense of replacing them. Thanks.

You need a 2 pole tester such as one of these https://www.screwfix.com/p/di-log-combivolt1-ac-dc-2-pole-voltage-continuity-tester-led-690v/371jp to check live and neutral are both present.

However, as stated above, a full EICR should be carried out.

No neutral makes a lot of sense. The light on the cooker point does not come on either so no neutral would also explain that. Those non contact testers are handy but limited.

I will get someone round to have a proper look at it.

Thanks for the help.
