All it means is during that period the fast growth countries like BRIC (brazil, russia, india, china), have overtaken the mature markets of Western Europe.
For example Chinas gdp 1980 = $300b 2017 = $13,000b
If you want to make a useful comparison, why not compare gdp growth of USA to the EU -its pretty much the same growth rate ( except since 2016 its tailed due to your vote).

Funnily enough my wife voted remain. She has no interest in politics and because of that she thought remain would be the safe option which would avoid 'disruption'.
