not that long ago pretty much everything was state owned , which is not a good idea imo ( railways are different )

IMHO, the core issue isn't HMG, managers, the unions or any combination of those. We all recall the days transam is talking about but there have been massive changes since then in both the world economy and transportation. Unless we imposed some form of protectionism, I doubt very much whether any government could balance the books in any of the old nationalised areas without having to resort to drastic pruning. It's not really possible to compare us with other nations because there is not a level playing field in many key areas including labour laws, internal politics and, of course, culture.

Service was much worse under BR. Punctuality and service was poor, they shut down half the network, and were responsible for the worst accidents. You may not like Southern, but it's still better than it used to be.
