Hi guys,

Am hoping to pick your brains. I am installing 3 down lights in my bathroom which am hoping to feed off an existing ceiling rose that i will change to a choc box. I also want to add an independent fan that is not timed and switched from a 2 gang switch outside the bathroom. My question is can I feed this fan from the same ceiling rose ( the rose is already quite crowded with existing wires) and will it work independently from the lights as I don't always want them on at the same time.

Thanks in advance

Yes provided you have a live, neutral and earth available at rose/chocbox.

Is there reason why the ceiling is already quite crowded?
I assume you haven't run the new downlights in a star formation from this rose/chocbox? Or are you using higher than necessary cable sizes?

Thanks for the quick reply riveralt,

I think the the rosé is part of a circuit which could also be feeding the hall or loft conversion. I was planning on daisy chaining the 3 downlights. Am using 1.5mm t&e. I was wondering is it possible to put another choc box in the circuit and feed the fan from their rather than from the existing rise / choc box? Also if I do this can I still work the fan indecently from the lights?

Thanks again

Anything is possible providing if you have a live, neutral and CPC(earth), be aware that any joints/junctions made must be easily accessible for maintenance, inspection and testing, unless you use special jointing methods or MF boxes the cable joints can not be left in ceiling void without ease of access.

If you wish to work the fan indecently in the privacy of your own home, involving only consenting adults, then that is none of our business.

If you also want to work it independently of the lights then you need to supply the switch with a permanent live, not one switched by the light switch, so depending on where you put your JB you might or might not achieve this.

I think you should learn a bit more about the basics of circuits, and the specifics of lighting ones.

Remember that any junction boxes which are not accessible for inspection and testing should be, and be marked, maintenance free.
