Russia was going toward poland through belarus and ukraine. Belarus lent a route but ukraine refused and attacked. Essentially ukraine prevented russia from eliminating the imminent threat it faced.

As an analyst, one can draw a conclusion based on facts on the ground. Russians are in belarus. It's obvious they are there to face off the polish threat of nato missile systems. You don't see russians invading belarus because they are not. Same would have applied to ukraine. Unfortunately ukraine attacked.
