Americans are introduced to the sport of golf for the first time by a Scottish immigrant John Reid using balls and clubs brought from the UK and three holes set up in a cow pasture at Yonkers near New York

the St andrews golf club of Yonkers was formed later that year

Golf shoe developers came up with a spiked shoe that scares the worms back underground. I'm surprised you've not heard of 'golf spikes'.

Regular maintenance.
Worms like the dead matter of leaves, grass cuttings, thatch, etc.
Keeping the grass short and the greens free of such dead matter reduces the probability of worms.
