fishing reels

hi all...the fishing reel i was given last year when i started fishing is about knacked. i am looking for a new reel but am undecided what to buy. i have been looking at shimono / daiwa / okuma reels i just pleasure fish and carp fish. can any of you wise old anglers out there give me a bit of advice

Never done any Fresh Water fishing. Used to do a lot of sea fishing but not done any for about 15 years. Abu Garcia was 'the' brand back then for Reels. Have a look at them.

Get your self a mid price shimono should last for years if you look after it.

As Blasphemous said the Abu were good reels. Unfortunately like everything else their quality ain't what it use to be

Still got 70/80s Abu reel and as good as new.
Sons bought one about 3 years ago, rough as hell now.

Mick, hard to get a reel for two jobs, for carp the shimano 5010 i use them on the Severn and the Ribble for Barbel, (forget your carp!) A classic reel that still fetches good money on ebay.

Can't remember the other reels name but it's shimano again, for general pleasure fishing.A lighter reel with a faster retrieve for lighter fish.

Stick with what you can afford but shimano has a good resale price when you get bored.(you will).

A decent rod is as important as the reel.Good luck.

I use Shimano bait runners for my carp fishing. Roughly £125 each.
The spinning, float and ledger reels are Okuma. Between £40 and £90 quid each.
My beach caster reel is a fixed spool ( cannot get on with Multipliers) A Browning for about £30 quid. Not enough sea fishing to warrant any better.

As you can guess I use a reel matched to each rod, dont ask about the Pole tackle lol!!!

For you a £50 quid a Shimano ( cheaper on Ebayer) would suit. With a spare spool or two you could "Carp" "Ledger and or Float" Even light Pike fishing (Although the best bit of the Pike season is over IMHO). Very helpful with the "Bait runner" override, or have you not seen a rod go walkabout on a take

You must have had a old one, a looked after and maintained reel will last for years, and spares are always available.

Whatever you choose, have fun enjoy and of course have a NRA Licence.

Shimano bait runners (as Alarm) are the mutz nutz. You do get what you pay for.

Still use the centrepin on the rivers - its 70 odd years old now. Had chub to 5lb and roach to 2 1/2lb on it. Never caught a barbel

I am a serious carp / cat angler though, so I'm more geared for them. Its no fun when the bream get involved, but I had a 9lb er last year. Big slimy mass of lazy rubbish though.

LOL at the Bream, a m8 and me had 23 between us ( about equal split, hit the shoal obviously) from 4 to 6 lbs. Made for a fun day.

He was on feeder I was on a straight ledger.

50LBS is the chair , as I am dainty on the feet...........many yrs of marital.........oops martial arts see to that.

On that day was a 4lbs BS hook length with a main of 10lbs as we know in that feeder lake we have carp to 15lb.
Overkill for the bream but with "break aways" fine for the carp.

Sorry the 0.12 line does my head in, old skool. BS is what I know best.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOhh they do some bargains sometimes.
Might get a couple of pairs of the polarised glasses, always sitting on mine!!!

Got a rod bag there last yr, still going strong.
A cheap carbon pole I murdered for parts to make a longer telescopic landing net handle.
And a unhooking mat that folds down rather well.


Not sure about those reels though
