Depends on the saw, and on how much practice you've had using it. Power tools just speed the job up and reduce any tidying up you need to do with a hand plane afterwards.
As to long spirit levels, in the days before we all carried 6ft levels it was fairly normal to plane-up a piece of knot-free redwood in the workshop and tape a 3 or 4ft level onto that as both straight edge and long level when required. The problem these days would be to get a piece of straight, knot-free anything form the likes of B&Poo
