Not exactly a great start to becoming an 'independent globally influential country'...

But I daresay the same people who voted to make us 'independent' will rejoice in the gradual reigning in of the foreign aid budget, even though it is to their own ultimate detriment!

About 12 years ago I started studying health sciences, and the first module was about clean water and sanitation. It was calculated that if every person in Europe (in an area where tap water is totally safe, which is most areas) stopped buying bottled water and donated that money to water charities, we Europeans could provide everybody in the world with clean water and sanitation in just 5 years.

We could have saved the world from filthy water and pooing in the streets twice over in that time. Instead, we have increased the number of water bottles we buy, and then we dump them all in landfills and in the Med. Lovely.

My point is, a tiny bit of government intervention could give everybody in the world clean water and sanitation. But we are driven by shareholder profits, not by humanitarian goals.

So the world will continue to suffer. Diseases will continue to spread. Some of them will end up in Europe.

if places like India spent the billions they spend on nuclear bombs and a space programme
On there own population than millions could have access to clean water and decent sanitation

than millions would not have to poo in the open

but some how that’s the fault of those who buy bottled water

If every one in the UK installed toilets in there house with a convectional flush syphon as opposed to a dump
Valve it would save enough water equal to 6 Olympic swimming pools a week that leaks to drain

it does not always matter.

where I live there is more than enough fresh water, it flows away to the sea and if a bit was saved, it would not be of any particular use.

I used to live in a place where numerous artesian wells drew water for industry, laundries and breweries. When industry declined and they stopped pumping, the water table rose and became a problem in tunnels and cellars.

We, as we are frequently reminded are just a tiny unimportant little island. WE, said tiny little island occupants, have probably done more for this planet in regards to science, innovations, inventions & charities per head of population, than any other nation on Earth.
You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink.
Maybe it’s time authorities on the other side stepped up to the plate rather than just playing the guilt card on us daily.

tiny little island

The UK (while it lasts) is one of the major European countries.

It got smaller when RoI won back its independence, and may get smaller again if Scotland and NI decide to Take Back Control.

England alone has a population larger than Spain, and not much smaller than Italy. Not as big as France or Germany, obviously. But a substantial country in the second tier.
